ESPN ScoreCenter

ESPN ScoreCenter is a comprehensive global live sports scores service. Complete live soccer score coverage of more than 500 leagues worldwide. Now available only exclusively on the iPhone, Mark Boulton Design were involved in designing the web user interface.

Every sport, every league, every match

ESPN ScoreCenter had high ambitions: create a web application whereby a user could access every game, in every league, in every sport in a 72 hour window of games past, present and future. Oh, and it was to be in five languages too. This presented a considerable design task.

The site had to provide speedy access to scores for your match, whatever the league, whatever the country. The navigation challenge was also considerable. We designed a simple three tiered navigation structure to allow a user to drill down to their game as quickly as possible. All scores were updated every five minutes to provide a 'near-live' score experience.

It's all about the data

Every different sport displays the scores of that sport in its own unique way. Quite often, the display of this data has roots in the sports history. Sometimes decades of information design history had to be considered so the display of data could be as closely aligned to the sports norms.

The branding of the site was closely aligned to ESPN's TV segment of the same name. Initially the web platform gave way to the iPhone application (available at ScoreCenter.com). The online application was taken offline in 2009.
